Moody’s Tire & Auto: Jim and Jimmy Moody

Seven decades, just three shy of a century: that’s how long Moody’s Tire & Auto and the Moody family have been providing Franklin, Tennessee with trusted and affordable vehicle maintenance and repair services through Moody’s Tire & Auto.

You can trace its beginnings back to 1944, when Ed Moody returned home to Tennessee after serving in the Philippines with the U.S. Army during World War II. He bought into a Goodyear Tire business in Franklin—one of the few places to buy tires in the area at the time—and he quickly gained a reputation for his honest approach to selling a quality product at a fair price, always with a focus on customer service.

Ed Moody’s nephew, Jim Moody, began helping change tires there when he was 12 years old.

“My daddy didn’t think I had enough to do,” Jim explained with a chuckle.

He worked after school and on weekends, learning the ins and outs of the industry. Jim was promoted to partner when he was in his 20s, and in 1997, he bought the business from his Uncle Ed.

Today, Jim still owns Moody’s Tire, having seen the staff of two grow to 25 employees—many of whom have been with them for 30 or 40 years.

And Moody’s Tire will continue to be family run for years to come with Jim’s son, Jimmy Moody, set to inherit the company. At 16, Jimmy began helping change oil and rotate tires. Much like his dad did, he worked weekends and summers learning how to run the business.

Jimmy earned a degree in entrepreneurship from Belmont University, and now, at 28, serves as the company’s general manager.

“That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do is come into this store,” Jimmy said.

As Franklin and surrounding communities have grown—and with neighboring areas like Cool Springs presenting more and more competition—Moody’s success has largely been rooted in its loyal customer base and hard-earned reputation for quality service at a good price.

Jim says the key to maintaining a successful business is honest customer relations. Jimmy agrees, and adds that they have always been devoted to putting the customer first.

“We’ve been around for 70 years and we’ve been doing the same thing for 70 years,” Jimmy said. “We’ve changed with technology and people, but we work on the same drive. If we changed that, we wouldn’t be the same business.”

Ask any customer who walks through their doors on any given day why they chose Moody’s Tire, and they’ll likely tell you they’ve been coming for years, or that someone else sent them. Jim and Jimmy say they owe their growth and success to word of mouth.

“We stick to our roots and do what we’ve been doing forever, and we keep seeing the same customers,” Jimmy said.

“As long as we offer good products, good prices and good service, they’ll be back,” said Jim. “We’re also known for being real lady friendly.”

It’s a passion that’s lasted one lifetime, and will continue to grow for at least two more. The Moody family said goodbye to Ed last year, but as they celebrate their 70th anniversary this year, they have a lot to look forward to.

“Jimmy will take us into 100 years,” Jim said with a smile.

Jimmy looked over and added, “And Dad will take us to 99.”
